Chinese Video Sites

October 6th, 2009 by admin, No Comments

Here’s a short list of Chinese video hosting and sharing sites. There are dozens upon dozens of YouTube clones in China, but these are the most important ones. One thing to keep in mind though is that all Chinese tube sites can get terribly slow in the evening when workers get home and start watching. Best time to watch is from 2 am to 8 am.

Tudou China’s first video sharing site.

Youku Has lots of up to date material. Host many videos that are discussedon the Chinese web.

56.com Used to host loads of illegal content until the government cracked down on it in 2007 (?).

6.cn Also lots of material on this tube. Often outperforms the other tubes when it comes to bandwidth.

And then there’s also Ku6, CNTV (as CCTV subsidiary), PPStream, and PPLive (requires you to download their media player).

Chinese Search Engines

The most popular Chinese search engine is without a doubt Baidu, it is even more popular than Google in China. Baidu lost some of its search volume when they crippled their mp3 search feature which a lot of Chinese used to download MP3s for free (illegally). But due to mounting pressure Baidu had to put in restrictions on copyrighted content. Google countered by creating a mp3 search feature themselves, making agreements with some of the largest music labels, allowing them to offer MP3s free of charge to people in the PRC.

Some other engines are Sogou and Timway (Hong Kong search engine, also has an English interface).
